Top 3 Hindi Films from 90s that should never be remade

Remakes are supposed to be a tribute to the original work - sometimes through a similar depiction, sometimes through a modern adaption through the directors eyes (generally has a few tweaks) and sometimes as a spin-off from the original. All the three variants of remakes are capable of achieving cinematic milestones or atleast replicate the success. The question does remain of the audience acceptance as there is a natural tendency to compare and evaluate judge.

Here are three commercial Bollywood films of the 90s decade that according to me should never be remade. Not just on the basis of time relevance but also due to the fact that these movies had a perfect mix which would be very hard to successfully replicate:

1) ANDAZ APNA APNA (1994)

A classic case of a film that on release was not a stupendous success but over the years it has achieved a very deserving cult status. There has been some news since the last couple of years of remaking this film but it almost is a scary thought to even imagine this film being remade. A film that has a comedy element like this nowadays get termed by critics as 'leave your brain behind movie'. Sadly to them, most of the big entertaining films of 90s actually would fall into that category. But who is complaining? Not the hardcore film lover for sure.

Both Salman and Aamir Khan have matured a lot as actors and none of the present day actresses would probably have the pure innocence shown by Karishma Kapoor. Paresh Rawal might execute his part like a sleep-walk but specially casting two lead actors that are really that innocent, transparent would be near impossible. There would be a very fine line between innocence and looking stupid when portraying Prem and Amar.

2) DDLJ (1995)

One of the greatest pairings in the history of Indian cinema has been SRK-Kajol. Amongst many highly successful pairings, two that stands out in my mind are Raj Kapoor-Nargis & Uttam Kumar-Suchitra Sen. Of these three pairings, SRK-Kajol has to be the one more hyped than successful, though they looked great together on-screen.

The present day wow factor about SRK-Kajol has all its roots in the 90s decade. Everything about the film can still be relevant to the present time apart from the actors, their genuine on-screen chemistry of 90s and of course the music. To me the lead pairing has become a myth and the more films they have worked together since 2000 has shown that the actual magic lied in the 90s.

It would be extremely hard to find an actor to replace the SRK spark in DDLJ. Also, all the playback singers and the music director duo were in their top form. The music had a very organic feel to it and not to mention - no item songs. A blockbuster upon release, a blockbuster today and always - DDLJ deserves to remain untouched.

3) Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994)

The whole essence and feel of the film was something that suited the time it released. It would probably be a challenge for the same team to recreate this film and match the original, recent release Prem Ratan Dhan Payo proves that the audience has evolved with time and so has the actors. Even a Salman Khan would not be able to match this Hum Aapke Hain Koun's Prem completely in the present day.
